Stories and Emotions: An Exploration of Children’s Books that Support the Development of Emotional Literacy.

Type: In-Person Learning

Location: Meridian Room, EarlyON - 2nd floor, Stone Road Mall, 435 Stone Rd W, Guelph

Thursday, May 16, 2024 - Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Facilitator: Maria Cabal Garces, Pedagogical Leader, EYPRC

Join us for an evening exploring how children’s books can support children’s emotional literacy.

Using a protocol for examining children’s books, we will invite you to dive deeper in the study of children’s literature as a medium to support emotional literacy, in both children and educators.

In this session, we will explore the book “The Rabbit Listened”, written by Cori Doerrfeld (every participant will receive a copy of this book). Through our study, we will reflect on our own thoughts, emotions and values; we will dig deeper into the text and the images to interpret valuable messages; and we will consider ways we could bring the ideas of the book to life through curriculum making.

This month’s book selection: The Rabbit Listened

Author: Cory Doerrfel

Description:

When something sad happens, Taylor doesn’t know where to turn. All the animals are sure they have the answer. The chicken wants to talk it out, but Taylor doesn’t feel like chatting. The bear thinks Taylor should get angry, but that’s not quite right either. One by one, the animals try to tell Taylor how to act, and one by one they fail to offer comfort. Then the rabbit arrives. All the rabbit does is listen . . . which is just what Taylor needs.

With its spare, poignant text and irresistibly sweet illustration, The Rabbit Listened is about how to comfort and heal the people in your life, by taking the time to carefully, lovingly, gently listen.
