Exploring Children's Competence

Type: Virtual

Date: Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Facilitators: Amber Holmes, Pedagogical Leader, EYPRC

How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years stresses the importance of valuing children as competent and capable, and child care centres around the province include some iteration of "children are competent and capable' as part of their Programme Statement.

But when have we taken the time to dive deeply into what "competent" means when we refer to children?

Thinking pedagogically about what competence means opens us up to thinking about the individual strengths and needs of the children in our programmes. When is it appropriate to expect or anticipate comeptence in a skill? When is it inappropriate to expect competence in children? What is our own comfort level with children's competence, and what does it mean for children's sense of independence, autonomy and risk-taking?

Join us for an evening of dialogue and discovery about what it means to see children as competent.
