Sleep, Rest and the Pedagogy of Care
Type: In-Programme Professional Learning
“Care is an action, task, ritual or routine through which we physically respond to the child’s needs.”
“Care is an attitude through which we show our support for the child’s growth, health and protection by our response, attention, tone and presence.”
“Care is an ethic, a moral code by which we encounter one another with the view that care is the seed of our strength and survival.”
(Illuminating Care The Pedagogy and Practice of Care, Carol Garboden Murray, page 7).
In this in-programme professional learning session, your team will be invited to explore the practical ways in which learning is happening and can be nurtured during daily routines. We will explore what is done during the daily routine of sleep and rest, think about why practices are done, and understand more deeply how our actions during those moments of care impact children and families.
This session is inspired by the book “Illuminating Care. The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities” written by Carol Garbodden Murray.
The learning goals for this session are:
• Gain a deeper understanding of the importance of sleep and rest in early learning programmes.
• Explore how to provide ‘sleep conducive’ environments for children in our programmes and reflect about the importance of creating rituals of care that support children’s sense of belonging.
• Reflect on the importance of engaging in partnerships with families around sleep and rest and the ways in which we could approach such partnership.
This session can be offered both in-person or virtually.
